Brian J Davies, Executive Coach & Mentor

About being coached by me

When does it make sense to work with a coach?

Most often when you are either contemplating or instigating change for yourself, or having to plan for or cope with change required of you by others. Examples might be career planning, a promotion, coping with new challenges or simply improving performance or job satisfaction.

What should you expect from being coached by me?

I am a graduate of the Meyler Campbell Mastered Course. Their coaching approach is "non-directive". This means that, while I will facilitate meetings, I do not seek to either direct or judge you. This allows you to use any session to discover your own answers in your own way.

My clients say “Brian is really good at putting people at ease and is an exceptionally good listener”. I will therefore provide you with the space and time to examine a topic in depth; an environment in which unconscious thoughts and assumptions, which may be blocking your progress, can come to a conscious level to be better understood and potentially challenged.

What happens first?

We will arrange a “Chemistry” meeting which usually lasts for up to an hour. This will give you a good understanding of the coaching process and allow you to describe what you want to be coached on.  Most importantly, this is an opportunity for both to assess whether a good chemistry exists between us, before we enter into any formal business arrangement (there is no fee attached to this meeting).

Is this when a contract comes into play and how long is a usual coaching engagement?

Yes, assuming the "Chemistry" meeting has gone well, you would now agree a coaching contract with me. The most common arrangement is a six month engagement with one ninety minute coaching session in each of those six months.

What is the actual coaching process after that?

At your first coaching session, we would confirm the topic for the overall coaching engagement and then agree a specific goal from that topic to discuss at the session.

For the rest of any individual session, the underlying process is that we would seek a good understanding of the current reality affecting achieving your goal. Then move onto examining the different options available to you, together with the pros and cons of any possible actions. After which, you can then make a decision on concrete next steps and importantly I will also stress test your will to do this.

The clarity of purpose then achieved will increase your confidence, courage and energy, making success far more attainable.

Do psychometric tests play any part?

This is entirely up to you. In some cases, a client might have already had an MBTI assessment or completed a 360 review which they want to work further on with me.

I work a lot with Gallup Strengths and recommend the Top Five Clifton Strengths assessment.

Do you do life coaching?

No, I am an Executive or Business coach only and do not practice life coaching

How confidential is all this?

Everything discussed between coach and client remains totally confidential - I will not share information about you with anyone else.
