Brian J Davies, Executive Coach & Mentor

About Me

I am privileged to coach people at every stage of their careers from emerging talent up to Board Directors and CEOs.  I work in most business sectors and with every type of company from start-ups to global corporations and can draw on my extensive leadership and mentoring experience whenever needed.

Prior to coaching, I was a leader in the publishing industry for over 35 years, most recently as a Board Director at Penguin Random House, and have lived and worked in the UK, the US, Australia and New Zealand. I also spent significant time in India…

Prior to coaching, I was a leader in the publishing industry for over 35 years, most recently as a Board Director at Penguin Random House, and have lived and worked in the UK, the US, Australia and New Zealand. I also spent significant time in India and South Africa and managed people in most other parts of the world. Over that time, I established new companies in different countries, led the acquisition of others, and ran significant elements of two major mergers.

All of these experiences required helping people to not simply cope with change, but to actively thrive on it. Both as an executive and a non-executive director, I helped teams and individuals in diverse cultures across the world to do their best work. It became clear to me, whether I was managing senior executives or mentoring emerging talent, that influence rather than instruction brought more frequent and longer lasting success because the action was then owned by the individual, not by his or her boss. Coaching takes this one very significant step further in allowing the individual to own not only the action but the idea too.

Reflecting on just how effective this could be led me to become an executive coach and to qualify through the respected Meyler Campbell Mastered Course  (www.meylercampbell.com).

Good coaching is non-directional and non-judgemental but it must also be goal driven and pragmatic. The GROW structure underlying my coaching sessions ensures that my clients define a goal for the meeting and then have time to examine the realities and options before deciding on an achievable action plan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GROW_model).

My clients tell me that I am "good at putting people at ease" and also "an extremely good listener”; Nancy Kline’s Listening Environment is a key influence on my coaching style (www.timetothink.com/book/time-to-think). I am also a strong believer in the power of positive psychology and Strengths Coaching is therefore another resource I employ - building on peoples’ strengths always brings greater benefit than exhausting attempts to overcome their weaknesses (www.gallupstrengthscenter.com).

By identifying clear achievable goals, I seek to help individuals at key stages of their careers to boost their confidence, courage and energy, allowing them to achieve their real potential.
